Friendships are Deepened & Our Faith in God Strengthened

Presbyterian Women is a vibrant group of informed and faithful women within First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach. The synergy of combined talents comes from all age groups, which enhances our effectiveness and enables the group to accomplish much. Friendships are deepened and our faith in God is strengthened as we take on ambitious missions to benefit organizations near and far.

PW consists of six circles led by a Coordinating Team of officers, circle leaders, and program coordinators. These positions are held by dedicated volunteers who meet once a month to manage current and on-going PW missions and tasks as well as provide reports regarding their respective duties.

PW meets monthly from September through May. On the 3rd Monday of those months, circles come together in Stanton Hall for our Gatherings which offer an opportunity for fellowship and an overview of our monthly Bible study. We also enjoy a guest speaker from within our church or community who expands our knowledge of communal culture and needs. In addition to the Gatherings, each circle meets individually either at the church or in a member’s home for its own time of fellowship, mission, and devotion.

Each month Presbyterian Women asks the congregation to join us as we focus on the needs of one organization and collect tangible goods to support its mission. We also have two large kitchen projects – baking pies for Thanksgiving and cooking chili and Brunswick stew for Super Bowl weekend – that raise significant funds to support our outreach. These kitchen projects involve lots of women, lots of work, and an enormous amount of fun!!

And there’s so much more! For circle descriptions and more information, please click this link to the PW brochure and call the church office at (757)428-6332 for contact information.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

We are women of all ages, from all ethnic backgrounds, living in all communities coming together for one purpose…the Presbyterian Women’s Purpose:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves:

To nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,

To support the mission of the Church worldwide,

To work for justice and peace, and

To build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

PW offers a place to make lifelong friendships, to share Christian responsibility in helping others through our mission programs, and to grow in our individual faith journeys.

PW GATHERINGS

Presbyterian Women gather on the 3rd Mondays in September, October, and January-May and the 2nd Mondays in November and December at 9:45am in Stanton Hall. Each Gathering offers prayer, hymns, a speaker to motivate mission and volunteerism, a general business meeting, and an introduction to the selected chapter of the Bible study. PW members are organized into six “circles”. Each circle also meets individually for a more personal time of prayer, reflection, mission, fellowship, and PW business.

MISSION EVENTS

In order to provide for those in need and to financially support our missions, PW holds two “Donation Tables” every year to raise funds in support of those missions. The Sunday before Thanksgiving we offer delicious pies, other baked goodies, and maybe a craft item or two. On Super Bowl Sunday, we present Brunswick stew, chili, and corn bread. There is a lot of work (and fun!) involved. This year’s Bake/Mission Days are scheduled for November 16 & 17, 2017 and February 1 & 2, 2018.

FUND ALLOCATION

From Sept. 2016 – May of 2017, donations of more than $10,000 were distributed to various groups and endeavors. This funding assisted the Beach Health Clinic, FPC mission trips, and PiN Ministries, just to name a few. Countless lives continue to be touched by the generosity of our congregation.

SUNSHINE PEOPLE

Each circle sponsors a few members of our congregation who are no longer physically able to come to church. They need the fellowship, kindness, and prayer to come to them. A friendly face at least once a month and lots of warm wishes on special days go a long way to enriching the lives of these wonderful people.

CIRCLE DESCRIPTIONS

Dorcas: Tabitha, as she was known around Joppa, was best known for her good deeds and her work with the poor.Today our Circle tries to follow her Christian example through our missions. After hearing our Bible Study leader at the General gathering, our Circle will meet in homes several times a year for fellowship and more study of “Who Is Jesus”. We will meet briefly after the gatherings when necessary.

Elizabeth: The mother of John the Baptist and cousin of Mary, the mother of Jesus. This circle provides meals for an after-school program & supports Untamed Spirit. They meet after each Gathering for business and Bible study. Circle Elizabeth meets on the 3rd Mondays immediately following the PW Gathering.

Martha: Best known as sister to Mary and Lazarus, her reputation was one of working hard and ably managing a home. Circle Martha members are devoted to growing together spiritually and engaging our school-aged children in community mission work. We meet in the evenings to accommodate working moms and stay-at-home moms. We welcome all who would like to grow in their faith journey while making lifelong friends. Circle Martha meets on the 4th Mondays.

Mary: The mother of Jesus. Circle Mary is a group of young women dedicated to nurturing our families to grow in faith and Christian love. We provide “Meals for Moms” to mothers within the church to help ease the transition when bringing home a newborn child. We connect with one another during the FPC Young Adult Gatherings and monthly gatherings throughout the year. We welcome you and your family to Circle Mary. Circle Mary meets the 3rd Sundays during the Sunday School hour.

Rachel: The wife of Jacob, the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. Circle Rachel’s purpose is to enhance our relationship with God through prayer, Bible study, mission work, and fellowship. In mission, we provide meals for disadvantaged children and youth, among other activities. We enjoy fellowship through lunches and other social gatherings. Circle Rachel meets on the 3rd Mondays immediately following the PW Gathering.

Rebekah: The wife of Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob, who later became Israel. Circle Rebekah is an enthusiastic and caring group of women, some still gainfully employed, others happily retired, who meet in the evening in a member’s home. We seek spiritual growth, while enjoying warm companionship and intellectual stimulation through Bible study, usually with a dash of humor! Circle Rebekah meets on the 3rd Tuesdays.
