KIRK NIGHT-2010

Please join us for food, fellowship, and informative and rewarding group studies or activities on Wednesday nights during the Lenten Season.  The Kirk Nights series begins Ash Wednesday, February 17, at 5:45 p.m. and continues each Wednesday until March 17.

Three “electives” will be offered for youth and adults:
1. A study on Islam and Christianity led by Al Butzer using the book, Beyond 9/11: Christians and Muslims Together, by Ben Campbell Johnson, retired professor of evangelism at Columbia Theological Seminary (Presbyterian).  The book begins with the author’s personal story of awakening and his call to engage in bringing the two faiths together for conversation. The books includes “What Christians should know about Islam,” and “What Muslims should know about Christians” and includes four interviews, two with Muslims and two with Christians. Participants in the study will be encouraged to purchase a copy of the book and read a chapter or two each week.
2. Gary Combs will lead a study on discipleship.   A book titled The Disciple Making Church, by Glenn McDonald, will be the vehicle for thought and weekly discussion. Until recently, Glenn has pastored Zionsville Presbyterian Church in suburban Indianapolis, a church named one of the 300 Excellent Protestant Congregations in America in 2001. Glenn is a consultant on church growth for the PC(USA).  Members of the class will read two chapters (30-40 pages) per week, which will not cover the entire work.  While Kirk Nights will end officially on Wednesday, March 17, class members may elect to extend one more week in order to discuss the final chapters.
3. A hands-on mission workshop designed to emphasize service to the community and the church will offer participants the opportunity to put together aid packets for the homeless and for foreign missions, and to perform preparation projects for this summer’s Vacation Bible School.  Depending on the status of relief effort in Haiti, there may also be projects to assist victims of the recent earthquake.

Children grades K - 5 will experience an active, hands-on Journey through Lent: Part 2.  While the content will differ from last year’s, the learning activities will be just as exciting and engaging.
Nursery care will be provided for infants through 4 years.

Advanced registration will be required so that books may be ordered and adequate supplies will be available, so be on the look-out for sign-ups in upcoming bulletins and the next newsletter or contact the church office at 428-6332 or office @firstpresvb.org.
